Irene Kay “Jo” Jones
Irene Kay Jones, the widow of George Willis Jones, of Oologah died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021 at St. John’s Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Sapulpa on July 10, 1936, the daughter of Irene Emma Atchley (Wortman) and Earl Atchley. Irene, also known as Jo, was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Jo was a Sapulpa High School Majorette who loved dancing, high heels and silver jewelry. An animal lover, she never hesitated to help an animal in need, resulting in multiple animals being adopted into the family. She was a singer-songwriter from an early age, performing with her sister Earlene Atchley as the Atchley Sisters. Jo shared her lifelong love of music with her children, family and friends. The lyrics from one of the beautiful songs she wrote is particularly poignant in this moment:
“See that moon shining through the trees up there?
Maybe a breeze somewhere will blow it straight to you.
See those stars? Yes, I’m wondering where you are.
And if maybe you are thinking of me, too.”
She is preceded in death by her parents Irene and Earl Atchley, her sister Earlene Atchley, and her son Willis Jones. She is survived by her brother Guy Atchley; daughter Ilene “Dindy” Frank; son Tony Jones; granddaughters Summer Frank-Pearce, Lela VanOver, and Candice McCoy; grandsons Travis Jones and Tyler Jones; niece Jami Good and nephew Neil Atchley, as well as many cousins, great nieces and nephews, great granddaughters and great grandsons and beloved friends. Jo will be missed for her youthful, playful spirit and her infectious laugh.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Collinsville Dolton Funeral Home of Collinsville.
In lieu of a funeral service, family members plan to hold a bonfire in her honor at the home of her son Tony Jones sometime in late 2021. The bonfire will also honor Jo’s son Willis “Juny” Jones who died on April 15 of 2020.
